Rage Against the Machine – Sleep Now in the Fire (1999)
It’s 1999 and at 1:03 into this Michael Moore-directed Rage Against the Machine video a man is shown holding a “Trump for President” placard. It’s a commentary on where America, and in many ways ‘the West’ more generally, was headed. It was satire. And yet here we are, right on the bloody precipice.
Incredibly, Trump isn’t simply the celebrity face of shameless capitalism anymore (which the Apprentice star still is, for all his anti-establishment schtick), one that publicly supported “terrific” conservative Democrat candidate Hillary Clinton various times over the following 13 years or so. He’s now made himself the face of divisive race hate, religious intolerance and climate change denial. And yet here we are, right on the bloody precipice.
He has, however, always been a misogynist.
